Fish that have live babies give birth to young that are fully formed and able to swim. Females will carry the babies inside for approximately four to five weeks after the males fertilize them. Once the babies are born they will look for food. Guppies, platies, swordtails and mollies are breeds that give birth to their young live. Females are generally identified as the larger fish and they become fertilized by the male with its gonopodium or anal fin. Once a female is fertilized they are then able to give birth multiple times without the aid of the male.
The amount of time an egg laying fish goes through the process of hatching young varies from fish to fish. The most common amount if time is from one to two weeks. When the fish are hatched they will still have a sac attached to them, which provides nourishment during their early life. As the young fish grows the sac goes away.
The method that fish use to lay their eggs varies from fish to fish, as well. Some scatter the eggs across the bottom of the tank. The male fish will chase after the female while they are breeding. The eggs will be fertilized during this breeding technique and are usually ready to hatch in a matter of weeks once they land. Some fish that lay eggs choose a specific spot for the fish to be fertilized. They will attach the eggs to rocks, plants or the glass of the aquarium. The males then fertilize the eggs. There are even fish that lay the eggs on a nest produced by the male. The male fish blows bubbles that keep the eggs above the surface and oxygenated.
